Samsung unveils latest 200-Mpixel sensor for smartphones

[ad_1]

Samsung’s ISOCELL HP2 200-Mpixel image sensor boasts improved pixel technology and full-well capacity for premium smartphones. Rumored to be in the camera of its Galaxy S23 Ultra set to launch in February, the sensor features 0.6-µm pixels in the widely used 1/1.3-in. optical format.

Samsung’s advanced pixel binning allows the ISOCELL HP2 to shoot photos at 12.5, 50, and 200 Mpixels to accommodate varying light levels. According to the company, filming 8K video at 30 frames/s with a wide field of view and a bigger pixel size can produce sharp cinematic videos. Smart-ISO Pro, a high-performance HDR feature, merges different levels of ISO readouts from a single exposure. The feature allows the camera to take 12.5-Mpixel images and 4K video at 60 frames/s in HDR.

The ISOCELL HP2 also leverages Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG) technology to boost the pixel’s full-well capacity by more than 33%. This can reduce overexposure and enhance color reproduction, especially in bright light conditions.

In low-light settings, the ISOCELL HP2 sensor’s auto-focusing benefits from Super QPD, which allows the sensor to use all of its 200 million pixels as focusing agents. These focusing agents are grouped by four adjacent pixels to recognize both horizontal and vertical pattern changes, enabling faster and more accurate auto-focusing.

The ISOCELL HP2 image sensor is now in mass production.
